David C. Martin, MD
Award

Award Criteria

The David C. Martin Award was established to encourage and support medical students' interest in geriatrics, with the ultimate aim of preparing future leaders in geriatric medicine.

Since its inception, the Society is proud to have awarded over $40,000.00 to local medical students. This is an exciting opportunity for medical students who are specializing in the field of geriatrics to be honored at the Annual Conference of the American Geriatrics Society. At the meeting, students have the honor of presenting their work, networking with leaders in geriatrics, and to become a part of the AFAR ongoing network. It is the hope of the Society that students come away with a greater appreciation of the challenges and rewards of geriatrics and, ultimately, pursue a career in geriatrics..

The procedure to qualify for the award is as follows:

Abstracts are to be submitted to:

Pennsylvania Geriatrics Society – Western Division

Attn: Nadine Popovich ~ 713 Ridge Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15212

Or by email to: npopovich@acms.org Fax to: 412-321-5323

Questions: Contact Nadine @ 412-321-5035 ext 110

Deadline: On or Before March 6, 2009

Recipients will be notified on or about March 12th

Details and Criteria for the David C. Martin Award are as follows:

  • A $1,500.00 honorarium to be used solely to attend the Annual Conference of the American Geriatrics Society will be awarded to recipients. In the event that a medical student is receiving a stipend from the AGS/AFAR for presentation at the national meeting, the Society will award the difference of the AGS/AFAR stipend and the $1,500.00 DCM honorarium. The total of the stipend and the difference is not to exceed $1,500.00. (Note: The stipend from the AGS/AFAR will differ each year as the AGS national conference is held at a different site each year.)
  • Entries must be available for display during the Society's annual Clinical Update in Geriatric Medicine Conference (March 19-21, 2009, Omni William Penn Hotel, Pittsburgh, PA).
  • A student's abstract, poster or clinical vignette must be accepted by the American Geriatrics Society, or the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) student section of the American Geriatrics Society
  • All medical students from the Western Pennsylvania Region are eligible. Students whose medical school is not in our region are eligible, provided that their research is conducted in the jurisdiction of the Pennsylvania Geriatrics Society – Western Division region.* Students who have had an abstract, poster or clinical vignette accepted for an award by another local chapter of the AGS are not eligible to receive the David C. Martin award.
  • If a medical student does not receive a stipend from the AGS to be used to attend the national conference, the full $1,500.00 will be awarded to the medical student.
  • Students should be first author, but secondary authorship will be considered if the student had substantive input into the project.
  • The Board of Directors will vote for the winner(s) of the award. Winners will be notified in a timely manner prior to the AGS conference.
